Stunning Slovenia. We instantly fell in love with Slovenia. It has an overwhelming feeling of peace and tranquility and is somewhere we would like to spend more time exploring.

As I said in my previous post, Jess arrived to spend the weekend celebrating Morgan’s Birthday at Lake Bled. We arrived at our little Aire. It was nothing flash. It was a new parking lot the basics like greywater dumping & power but, it was all we needed. On the plus side, it was only a short walk to the Lake.
We got ourselves set up, grabbed our towels and headed straight for the Lake. Morgan and I had been looking forward to Lake Bled. We had seen so many photos online and, my Mum & Dad said it was a highlight of their trip back in 2016. As we approached, we got our first glimpse of the beautiful blue lake and a stunning view of the Bled Castle, which is located on a cliff, 130 meters above the Lake Bled. We were in absolute awe. Bled is something out of a fairytale.
As we wandered around the lakeside, our jaws were dropping at every turn. We couldn’t resist the water any longer so we plonked our towels down and jumped straight in! After a quick dip, we walked further around the lake and found another spot for a swim and a few beverages. We spent the rest of the afternoon laying by the lake, with a view that honestly didn’t look real. It was bliss.

Jess and I decided to get up early this morning and hike up to a viewpoint that looks back down over the lake and little Bled Island with its lovely church. The view is arguably the most iconic view of Lake Bled. Morgan was a little under the weather (self-inflicted) as he had had an “on night” the previous evening so he couldn’t make the journey. The hike from our Aire took us a little under an hour to reach the top. It was hot! We were sweaty but the view….. Wow. It was well worth it. Of course, I did what I always do and took a million photos but to be honest, it is one of those things that you have to just see for yourself. The photos don’t quite do it justice.
By 10 am Morgan has risen from the dead and came to meet us for a refreshing swim in the Lake. Later that afternoon we decided to rent a rowboat. This was an absolute highlight of our time at Bled! We bought a few ciders to take on the boat and then spent the following hour rowing around, sipping ciders and enjoying the heat. We even taught Jess to row!
The rest of the afternoon was spent sitting back at the lakeside, napping in the late afternoon sun and yeap… sipping on ciders!
Didnt last too long, Morgs had enough of getting sprayed! Back in the drivers seat
That evening we were treated to the most beautiful dinner (thanks to Michael & Morag!!) for Morgans birthday. We booked into a gorgeous resturant, right on the lake and enjoyed some of the best food we’ve had during our travels- fresh fish, fresh octopus, and a tuffle mushroom rissoto. Of course our dinner was paired with a lovely glass of Rosé. We had a wonderful evening celebrating Morgs birthday.
While at dinner, our waiter told us there was an event that evening where they would be lighting 10,000 candles on the lake (they were floating in eggshells). We decided we still needed to get our hands on the famous Bled Cake we had been hearing all about, so we made our way to watch the candles and find some Bled Cake. Seeing 10,000 candles on the lake was mesmerizing. It was hard to capture in a photo but it lit up the lake so beautifully. It made Lake Bled look even more magical. As for the Bled Cake? It certainly did not disappoint! I can see what the fuss is about! What a perfect way to end a beautiful day.

Our time at Lake Bled was coming to an end, however before we left Morgan wanted to do the hike that he had missed out on the day before. We woke early and started the journey to the viewpoint. We stopped off multiple times along the way to take photographs of Little Bled from all different angles! We had one last walk around the Lake before saying goodbye as we made our way to Lake Bohinj, only 30 minutes away.
Lake Bohinj was also absolutely gorgeous and slightly less busy than Lake Bled. We spent a few hours swimming and laying in the sun before we needed to make tracks, back to Ljubliana for Jess to fly back to London.
We had a stunning weekend at Lake Bled. It has been another highlight of our European trip. It had a different feel and atmosphere to anywhere else we have been. Lake Bled was an absolute dream and we can’t wait to go back!
