The historic city of Florence is pretty compact – which was ideal for us as we only had one full day to see and eat as much as we could!
Our day kicked off early with a gorgeous bus ride through the neighboring Tuscan villages. The rolling hills were dense with vineyards and, scattered amongst the vines, were the stunning Tuscan villas I had always dreamt of.
We started our day with a 3-hour walking tour which as you’ve probably guessed by now, is one of the ways we get the most out of a city. Our tour guide was great! She provided a great mixture of history, historical sites, great places to eat, and where to find good wine! What more could you want?
We saw the stunning Florence Cathedral (something I have always wanted to see!), walked through the Piazza della Repubblica (old Jewish ghetto), and marvelled at the statues in the Piazza della Signoria. The statues are incredible with the 500 year old Fountain of Neptune, Perseus with the head of Medusa and the famous Michelangelo’s David (which is a replica).
Once we finished the walking tour it was time to get busy finding and consuming all the delicious food we could! The first stop was All’Antico Vinaio. As you can see from the pictures below – it is a hot spot! Not only for tourists though, but for locals too! It’s a type of sandwich that is made with cold meats and truffles. It was delicious!!! They are so popular that they have opened 3 shops all right next to each other!
Well, you can’t come Tuscany without drinking gorgoues Tuscan wine and eat fresh olives, right? We found the perfect little spot to ecape the heat and watch the world go by.
Our day in Florence was a whirlwind! We got a great little taster of what the city has to offer but we left feeling that there is far more to be explored! What we do know is Florence has great food, great wine, and seriously gorgeous architecture!
